How to become an industry expert in under 3 hours?

As a finance professional, you might analyze a logistics company at 10 AM, a steel manufacturer at 2 PM, and pitch a coffee brand by 6 PM.

Same day. Three completely different industries.

Here's my system (let's take the steel industry example):

Step 1:
Google: "Steel industry + [firm name] report pdf"
The firms: McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Big 4s, Redseer, Inc42.
These reports are gold. They've already done the heavy lifting.

Step 2:
Don't read every word. Skim 5-6 reports in 30 minutes.
Pick the one that's most relevant to your task (market sizing? supply chain? consumer behavior?) and go deep for another 30 minutes.

Step 3: AI as Your Research Assistant
Feed all PDFs into Gemini/NotebookLM.
Ask specific prompts:
"Explain the steel value chain to a 10-year-old"
"What's the setup cost for a steel plant in India?"
"What are the top 3 profit levers in this industry?"
This compresses hours of analysis into 15 minutes.

Step 4: Validate with Operators
LinkedIn cold message 3-5 people who've worked in the industry.
Even a 15-minute call gives you context reports can't: "What actually kills margins?" or "What do consultants always get wrong?"

Step 5: Build Your Cheat Sheet
Create a one-pager:
Key trends, Major players, Profit/loss drivers, 3-5 surprising stats

You now know more than 90% of people in the room.

The Formula:
Reports (1 hr) + AI synthesis (30 min) + Operator calls (45 min) + Cheat sheet (15 min) = Industry Fluency
